New Change to the Book of Mormon Introduction

The LDS Church has changed a single word in the introduction page of the Book of Mormon. The original phrase read, “After thousands of years, all were destroyed except the Lamanites, and they are the principal ancestors of the American Indians”, and was originally written by Elder Bruce R. McConkie in 1981. The new version reads, “After thousands of years, all were destroyed except the Lamanites, and they are among the ancestors of the American Indians.”

The implications of the name change are that the once wide-spread stance in the Church that the Book of Mormon peoples were the only inhabitants of ancient America has shifted in light of scientific evidence showing that Native Americans are mainly descended from Asiatic people who migrated to the New World thousands of years ago via the Bering Strait.
